For those on the island or considering coming to Grenada. Do not miss out on Fish Friday in Gouyave. This is a new project started sometime in August or September - apparently an attempt to get more tourists to that area of the island.
Everything Friday night starting at 7PM, one of the streets off the main road is closed off and food stands are set up all down the street serving everything fish. You can't miss it. Parking if you can't find it is available in the church lot in the street just before the Fish Friday Street. It is fabulous!!! Highlights for me were the Tiggery (sp?) cakes made from eel elvers (tiny baby eels that are spawned in the freshwater rivers of Grenada when the adults move in from the sea) and Little Jacks. These tiny eels (if they don't make the cooking pot) spend a few years in the freshwater rivers before going to sea to mature as adults. The cakes are a crisp deep fried pancakes with baby eels in them. Very tasty. Everything fish you can imagine: fried, steamed, grilled of all kinds - tuna, kingfish, snapper etc etc. Ever have MARLIN PIZZA? Its there!! Little jacks ... floured and fried tiny jackfish. I regularly eat a plate of a dozen or more of these with hot sauce. Similar to fried sardines ... but way better. Lobsters. Fried breadfruit ... and of course ... lots of Carib. The Grenville drummers also frequent to play their music. Finally, if you have not had enough fish ... the Fish Market is open late on Friday ... so you can take some home to cook yourself. Don't miss this event. Its a great party where you can meet so many people and eat wonderful food ... what more can anyone want. We finally went last Friday and let me tell you it is "excellent".
They had about 15-20 different vendors and all had a different menu. Six of us had the Fish Kebab for EC$10 and everybody loved it, the Fish Kebab vendor was sold out in no time. Zebrafish is right, if you in Grenada and you love fish - you should not miss it!!!!!!!! Unfortunately it is a long drive from St.George's and I would recommend to get together with other friends or hotel guests, so you can share a taxi. -------------------- Mieka

sorry you will only have 1 friday to do the fishfry. My advice is to get there hungry! (IMG:http://grenadatravelforum.com/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) When we went, the saddest thing was not being able to try more stuff, because we were full in no time flat. The lobsters were looking especially good and there was fried fish in Pita bread or bakes....curries, soups, kebabs (shrimp and fish)mmmmmm...the list goes on. Get there for 7pm on the dot because some of them, like the kebab guy, sell out in no time flat. Once you have a couple of those under your belt, you can relax and take the rest in stride. On the last Friday of every month, they have started a blow out Fish Friday event where they set up a large entertainment stage. I went to the recent one and they had musicians, singers, and dancers going for most of the night. There also seems to be more food vendors on this special night.
Its definitely worth going. I have been there 4 times in the last two months - can't get enough. The one thing that was missing in the earlier Fish Fridays was something to calm the sweet tooth after eating all that fish ... but the last time I was there one of the vendors had picked up on the opportunity and was selling guava cheese, tamarind candies, coconut pies and rolls. I've been doing a lot of reading about my upcoming first trip to Grenada, and this fish fry sound like the best thing yet. If anybody has been to the Anse la Reye fish fry on St. Lucia, are they comparable?
I do have a few questions for y'all, however. On another board, somebody has strongly urged taking a taxi instead of our rental car to Gouyave. Are the roads really that bad that I would be intimidated at night? I've driven on both Nevis and Tortola before, and Tortola was full of hilly roads with sharp switchbacks, which were fine, but the roads were admittedly in excellent repair there. I'm accustomed to driving on the right instead of the left, so please keep that in mind when issuing your opinion. If we do take a taxi, approximately how much to expect paying for roundtrip between the Lance Aux Epines area and Gouyave? How long of a drive? Fish Fry is well worth going to. Unfortunately i have not been to the one in St.Lucia, so i can't compare.
The road to Gouyave is a little rough in some areas, but the majority of it is will maintained. If you had a chance to drive on our roads for a few days before going to Fish Fry, then i don't think you will have a problem. Leave Lance Aux Epines around 6pm so you can take your time getting there. If you only had a rental car a day before, then i would highly recommend taking a taxi or signing up for one of the tour guides who offer it. Several of them are listed on Grenada Explorer. However, two of them i know offer it on a regular basis, are Sunsation Tours and Mandoo. Both will pick you up at your hotel and take you there and back. There are no plans to cancel the Fish Fry during the off season, beacuse it is so well patronized by the locals. In fact, they are considering expanding it. Thanks for the input, folks! You've given me some confidence about the driving--I'll have been in Grenada for a few days by the time Friday rolls around. I may decide to go the taxi route anyway, however, just so that both my husband and I can enjoy a few drinks and not have to worry about driving. Any idea of how much a roundtrip cabfare would be?

EJ, we've booked to have Mandoo take us up and back, he's well known on Grenada and we've used him once before for a tour.
