I'm planning on staying in Grenada for about two months which would make it the longest trip I've ever taken and I only own an old duffel bag and a backpack I haven't used since college, can anyone tell me about how much luggage is standard to take on these trips? How big? What kind? And a place (preferably online) where I can get them? Thanks!

Check with your airline on limitations and embargoes. In fact, call them three times to see if you get the same answers. I've had to repack several times at the ticket counter because I was given incorrect information. American Airlines, I think, is 75 pounds total (from US) and you cannot take boxes if you go through San Juan. Also plan on taking what you really need on board with you as you may not get the rest for a couple days. Minimal is best if you're willing to go into the island mode. No need for jeans, hair dryers, dress shoes, etc. Stating that, I always bring extra clothes and other stuff to give away. I've taken coolers, folding chairs, golf clubs, shoes, dive gear, toys, etc but was lighter coming home, both in weight and in spirit. Oh, and BTW, I'm extremely envious.

Here is the latest official statement from American Airlines with regards to baggage allowance. In my experience it all depends on where you check your bags. If you live in a place where the checkin person in not familiar with the rules, or where the checkin person is not an American Airlines employee ... than it is very likely you can check much more luggage than the 70 lbs restriction currently in place.

___________________________________________________________________________

American Eagle wishes to remind all customers that the baggage allowance for all American Eagle flights operating in and out of Grenada year round is as follows:

ü 2 checked bags. The total combined weight may not exceed 70 pounds for the 2 checked pieces.
ü 1 carry-on item (maximum 40 lbs).

Please be guided by the following:
ü All checked baggage must be within standard size specifications.
ü No boxes will be accepted as checked baggage.
ü Excess/Oversize/Overweight Baggage will not be accepted.
ü All checked bags weighing between 51 – 70 lbs are subject to
US $25.00 Overweight Fee.

Ø For the shipment of pets and personal effects, including books and other items, we suggest that customers contact Amerijet at 439-0092/93 as American Eagle does not offer cargo service into or out of Grenada.

Ø American Eagle's check-in counters will be opened daily from 6:30 AM. Customers are required to check-in 2 hours prior to departure. All flights are closed 40 minutes prior to departure.

However, for the period Saturday, December 10th – Thursday, December 15th, 2005 our ticket counter will be open at 6:00 AM.

Ø Please remember that American Eagle reserves the right to deny boarding to anyone under the influence of alcohol or behaving in an unseemly manner.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation, and look forward to welcoming you aboard.

I believe the 50 lb restriction is a per bag restriction but the total allowed weight is 70 lbs. (maximum two bags with a total weight of 70 lbs - see memo above).

You can find this official memo on the AA web site. If they only allowed you 50 lbs total, you might want to print this memo out to show the checkin staff when you fly again.

We were told 50 lbs per bag. It wasn't a problem for us, even for two weeks worth of gear.
