Heya,

I'm coming to Grenada in late June and am trying to get some information about camping on Grenada and Carriacou.

There doesn't seem to be much info on this forum, or anywhere for that matter. The only references I could find were as follows:

QUOTE
"There are about 300 campsites on Grenada. Vacationers are permitted to camp in the Great Etang National Park, and while you're visiting the sister island of Carriacou, you can pitch a tent on church or school property."

http://grenada-guide.info/accommodations/c...nd.eco.tourism/

"Camping is allowed in Grand Etang National Park in Grenada, and on school and church grounds in Carriacou."

http://www.geographia.com/grenada/gdtip01.htm

.... which sounds great, but have any fellow travellers camped on these islands, or is anyone able to confirm the veracity of these quotes?

Thanks for your help.

I know that one of my neighbors from Mt. Moritz sometimes spends the night "camping" on one of the beaches. I don't think they do much sleeping though. In all the hikes I have taken around the island I have not seen what I would call a campsite. I am sure that if you could find a place along a trail somewhere in the Grand Etang you could probably spend the night and have no problem because there are no dangerous critters in Grenada. I know of no rented camp sites in a campground but maybe someone else does.

I have also heard that you can camp on church and school property in Carriacou but I have not been over to that island in several years so can't tell you it is something that is common. There are some Carriacou experts that I am sure will add to this.

It seems that Grenadians are not big on sleeping out in the woods. What the heck they live only a couple of miles from the woods so they don't have to sleep there. I was hiking with a Grenadian from Victoria two weeks ago and he said that he had always thought about camping but just never got around to doing it.

Thanks very much for your insight Jon, I guess we'll just go for it and see what happens. Should be a bit of an adventure (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well at least you don't have to carry a sleeping bag good for -20F to go camping in Grenada.

I looked up the telephone number of the Grand Etang welcome center from my 2002 Grenada telephone book. It was 1-473-6160 then and may be the same now. They might be able to tell you more about camping.

You can probably find a new number for them somewhere on this site if that one is out of date.

I will be interested in hearing how things work out.

When you arrive at the airport the immigration guy will ask you where you plan to stay so it will be the first test of your plan right there.

Actually for most people IŽd recommend a good genuine hotel answer. But may be you are this adventurous character (IMG:style_emoticons/default/potiraet2.gif)

If I were camping in Carriacou I'd pick Anse La Roche or Petite Caranage beaches. Folks are used to seeing tents pitched there from the turtle nesting patrols. There are shelters at both in case of a downpour. Bugs can be a problem on calm nights though. There is some public land at High North and I've see evidence of camping up at the top. Always breeze up there so no bugs. Just be careful with fire and don't burn the whole place down - it is real dry these days I'm told.

Jack Adan islet has a great campsite too but you will need a Kayak to get you there - either the paddle kind or the water taxi kind ;-) Bring your fishing tackle!

Other ideas would be to post a message to the marinas to see if there are any boat sitting gigs - best place ever to camp is over the water under the stars on the trampoline of a nice catamaran! And on a clear night, you will see lots of stars.

My favourite camping spots are by the beach. Just watch out for the flatter beaches, the tide can come in quite far.

There are camping sites at the Rasta Dynasty Camping grounds near Crochu in Grenada. Give a call to Icee or Isaac and they can probably set you up.
