What are the current rates for land and water transportation around Grenada?
What's the fair amount for tipping? What's the best mode of transportation: 1. To get from the Grenada airport to St. George's? What would it cost? 2. To drive around the island with St. George's as the starting point? What would it cost? (Approximately) 3. To get from St. Georges to the waterfalls? What would it cost? How are fares determined? Would we have to worry about getting ripped off? I apologize for all the ignorant questions, but we are planning our first visit to Grenada and we're on a very tight budget! =) |

While I did not hire my taxi driver for the whole 10 days I was in Grenada, there were many days that I hired him for the whole day and paid approx 财-150 E.C. Our drivers name was Edwin Simon and he was one of the nicest people I met on the island. He has a very clean vehicle, has been on the island his whole life and knows many people and places across the island. He also drives very reasonably compared to some of the other more reckless taxi drivers I rode with. This makes your trip much more enjoyable. You can contact him at home in the evenings at 443-2368 or his cell phone is 407 1820 and his pager is 408 0100 if you are in country. Area code is 473. Many places include a service charge for the employee's, so look at your bill for this. Of course , for extra special service, tip as you normally would. The people are very gracious and will appreciate it. Try and tip the person directly in cash at the hotels because in some places, all tips go into a pool for all employee's leaving them little incentive to go out of the way for you.
I paid approx ฤ to get from the airport to St Georges. As I mentioned, my driver took us around the outside roads of the island one day for 贄-130 E.C. We went to the Annandale falls and spent time there swimming and jumping off the cliffs. We paid approx ์-80 E.C. for the trip and the waiting time. I suggest you see other places in the area while you are at the falls such as the Dougaldston (sp.) Estate, Goyavue etc... Just ask your driver in advance for the rate to go somewhere, you can always ask several drivers in advance and pick the one you like the best. This avoids any nderstanding and be sure to ask if the price quoted is E.C or otherwise. Beware that many of the drivers go very fast and this does not make for a pleasant touring experience. That is why i reccomend our driver so highly. The water fares depend on where you are going. The websites have the fares for the Osprey shuttle to Carriacou published, and there are also sailing chartr rates publised on the sites as well. |

You don't need to worry about transport costs - and certainly not taxi or hire car charges - use the buses. The most expensive fare is about $EC5 ($US2). You can get to within a short walk of pretty much any of the must-see attractions. The other great way to see the island, especially the interior, is on foot. Good walking boots/shoes are essential, but you'll see far more than most people will from the inside of an a/c jeep!
Wherever you need to get to . . . ask a Grenadian. They are a naturally warm and friendly people, who will go out of their way to help you share their love of their island and its attractions. Do try to get the ferry over to Carriacou - $EC75 per person return, and if you want to do the romantic desert island bit, get a water taxi over to sandy island (either from Hillsborough itself, or from Paradise beach, which is only a few minutes ride from town) - tiny sand island with really clear water and great snorkelling. It's worth staying overnight in Carriacou (very cheap guesthouses and apts are available) and see a bit of the island. The views are spectacular and the pace of life slow and gentle - a real step back in time (and a very healthy one at that). Enjoy your trip |

We used Dave's tours for everything from short taxi rides to a full day tour. His van is clean, he's a great driver and has lived there all of his life. It is much more relaxing to let someone else do the driving as navigating can be a little difficult if you don't know where you are going. He is extremely reasonable and accommodating.

We have just come back from Grenada (today actually) and I have to admit I found the bus fares very cheap. We were staying in Happy Hill and from there to St Georges it only cost ũ.50 EC for each adult and 50 cents for children. Some of the bus men do drive very fast so watch out if you are one with a weak heart. My mum was very frightened on some of the buses but I feel they are very safe. Road accidents involving buses are rare (so I am told - correct me if I am wrong, anyone??)
