Will be staying at La Sagesse in Grenada and Bayaleau Point Cottages on Carriacou in January, 2005- should we consider bringing a treated mosquito net, or are the screened windows enough protection?

Hi Caribron,

welcome on board.

I stayed at La Sagesse last year for a weekend, and had no problems with mosquitos in the room. However if you go outside on the beach at night or even in the afternoon I would suggest you use an mosquito repellant - which you can buy in Grenada.

I never been to Bayaleau Point Cottages, so I can't help you with that.
If you have enough space in your luggage I would suggest you take a small one with you, just in case you would need one.

Hi,

I can thoroughly recommend the Insect repellent made by Arawak Islands in Grenada itself. All natural ingredients and all my family swear by it. Very good at seeing off the sand flies too.

We now use it whenever and wherever we go and regularly top up by buying on-line from http://www.arawak-islands.com

Regards

Stewart,

Great tip, as we also think this product is the greatest. Much more earth friendly also. And now, the smell of it brings back memories !!!

Thanks for the advice-I found the web-site for Arawak for the repellent and will order some. I found that I have to enable cookies in order to post to the forum, but seems ok now.

Hi caribron,

you don't need to order the repellent if you come to Grenada. You get it all over the island; in supermarkets, drug stores, pharmacy, shops and in most hotel stores.

(IMG:http://hometown.aol.com/tuanzar/images/flash.gif) Call me chicken if you like, but I really want to enjoy my vacation in Grenada-
I've received the Hep A, typhoid, & tetanus vacs, and have ordered several
PowerDEET30 Insect Repellent Towelettes from Tec Labs. Has anyone tried these?
Now, if I can just find one of those protection suits like on the Spacelab, I'll be ready to go! (IMG:http://hometown.aol.com/tuanzar/images/test3.gif)

Back from La Sagesse, Paradise Inn, and Gem-
La Sagesse- No trouble with mosquitos- rooms screened and had no trouble outside when repellant used.
Paradise Inn- MOSQUITOS - Back windows are not screened and back up to a swamp. Rooms not airconditioned, so must choose between opening windows for mosquitos or sweating in the heat. First night was a miserable experience. But- live & learn- we decided to buy a floor fan and found that the Inn provided mosquito coils, so had two lovely nights at Paradise using fan and mosquito coils. The Inn rooms are terrific and I would definitely stay there on my next trip. I think that with additional investment, the Inn will become one of the best facilities in the region.
Gem- Rooms are screened and airconditioned, saw a couple of mosquitos, but our fault for leaving the balcony door open too much.
There is no way of getting around it- there are mosquitos in Grenada and Carriacou, especally since a lot of the Ivan debris hasn't been cleaned up in areas outside the hotel properties, compounded by the extra long rainy season.
Preparing for, and protecting against mosquitos will allow you to enjoy a wonderful tropical adventure.

CR

The room we had in Paradise Inn had a back window that did not open and the front ones as you say had mossie guards on them. We left the patio doors open all the time or we would have been too hot. We had no mossies in our room, my sister said she had 2 in hers. I agree, with the addition of some A/C, this place would be hard to beat, excellent value for money and right on the best beach in Carriacou. (bb

We had just a couple of mosquitoes at Gem, but only if we left glass door open. Just a few sand flies, not nearly as many as I anticipated. We were prepared with Deet, Skin-so-soft, etc. but I never used them. Breeze has been nice lately. Calm at sunset but no bug problems.
