Well, prior to all the hurricanes, we had decided on Anguilla for our 2005 Caribbean trip and figured we would try Grenada the following year. We booked 10 days at Rendezvous Bay on Anguilla. I hope things get back to normal as soon as possible on Grenada. It sounds like a wonderful island from everything I've read, and we hope to visit in 2006.

I was so surprised to see this thread... The last few month has been selfishly stressful (when compared to all the hardship on Grenada)... My fiance and I have been using this site as the perfect way to gain knowledge about Grenada. We fell in love with the the island and it's people from all of the wonderful stories you all have shared. We had planned a large wedding in the states, and had booked a Windjammer sailing out of Grenada for our honeymoon. Last winter, while deep in the planning stages of a big traditional wedding, we decided that all the stress was not worth it and we cancelled the big wedding, and decided to move it to Grenada, and then sail immediately afterwards on the Windjammer. We researched all the hotels and decided the Bel Air (belairplantation.com) was perfect!
Rhona at the Bel Air was delightful and so helpful with all of our wedding questions. We made arrangements for our handful of family and friends that were coming with us to stay at the Flamboyant. We had our airline reservations, reception menu planned, music, flowers, cake, Bel Air - everything and could not wait to experience Grenada for ourselves! Then, the unthinkable happened. We felt so bad for the people of Grenada after Ivan hit that we could not feel sorry for ourselves. How could we? We did not change our plans becasue we felt of all the places that could use our tourist dollars, Grenada would be it. And then Windjammer pulled out of Grenada for the time period of our wedding/honeymoon. That was the final straw. Since all of our guests coming for the wedding were also going on the Windjammer, we had to cancel our dream wedding in Grenada and move it somewhere else. We did not think it was fair to be make our guests make a commitment of time and money to help us celebrate in the midst of a recovering diaster area. We contacted Rhona at the Bel Air and expalined our story. We left a good portion of our deposit with the Bel Air to aid in Grenada's recovery and vowed to Rhona that some anniverasry in the future, we would celebrate at the Bel Air on the Island that we hoped to have been married on. What next, we stumbled upon Anguilla. Unfortunatly, (and I have searched) there are no internet sites for Anguilla that come close to this one in the depth of knowledge and scope of discussions that are presented on Grenada Explorer. Having said that, we did as much research as possible and decided that Anguilla would be the next best thing to Grenada. At least the airline connections are easier! Anguilla is more expensive (we are staying at the Rendezvous (rendezvousbay.com) and they have been very helpful in planning our wedding. The beaches look picture postcard perfect and the island's atmophere relaxed. We are now getting excited about our wedding again and look forward to the day that our schedules and finances allow us to enjoy the hospitality of Grenada. Thank you for sharing. |

It sounds like you have a beutiful wedding planned. I have to agree with you about the stresses of a wedding & all of the planning that goes into it. I was married on Grand Anse at sunset, and I can not think of a nicer setting. We saw another couple get married there, and they sailed off into the sunset on a catermaran, and came back about 4 hours later, then went to Carriacou the next day for more of their honeymoon. Standing on the beach and watching them sail off into that sunset (and it was a extremely striking sunset, more than normal) was quite an experience in itself.
Best of wishes to you and your future bride. Hopefully, you will have the chance to visit Grenada someday in the near future when things are better there. (IMG:http://grenadatravelforum.com/style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) -------------------- |

It's me, the original poster of this question. We ended up in Anguilla at the Rendezvous Bay Resort, in May, and we loved the ten days we spent there, although I got 47 - yes, 47 - mosquito bites the first nite. (My fault for not spraying my legs with bug spray). The beach at Rendezvous Bay was fabulous. Now we are starting to think about a 2006 trip to the Caribbean, and I am still drawn to the idea of Grenada.

Hey, Cat,
If all your bites were on your legs, there is a good possibility that you were bitten by sandfleas, also known as sandflies and no-see-ums. They love my ankles and leave big welts when I forget the bug spray. |

We are "antiques" and don't have a digital camera so I don't have any pix to post.
Also, I got my bites during dinner, at the restaurant (it was outdoors but not on the beach). Would there be sandfleas/sandflies other than on the beach? I did get welts, the likes of which I had never seen. |
